Corky Romano

Posted May 2009

I just watched the movie, Corky Romano. Tempted to draw while watching, as usual. I chose this actor, Richard Roundtree - because of some parties that I have coming up. I've been getting a lot of Parties to do Caricatures on the white t-shirts that are supplied by my clients. I usually don't color the whole face when I'm working on the t-shirts, but I didn't feel Confident on the times that I did want to color the whole face. Since I would have wanted to color Roundtree's face, I decided to draw him.

And instead of using PhotoShop or Color-sticks as I usually would, I used a heavy brown Chartpack marker. First trying to leave out Highlight, trying to shape with Contours....ick. Then I finally found a technique that worked! A quick, simple technique to color an entire face, add in a few shadows, and Yes! I'm thrilled with it!

I'm just in such a good mood. I learned 3-D Face-Painting today and applied it to the best skull I ever face-painted yet. Will the growth never cease? I'll post a photo of that Face-Painting if/when I ever find it in the thousands of photos that I have here.....

To be continued......

What makes one Caricature Better than another?

Posted May 2009

Watching movies again. This time it was Charlie's Angels. I drew the Angels quickly - almost as though I was at a party.

That's okay. People like to look 'normal'. Um. But. I'm a Caricature Artist! We exaggerate. We want to really see what's unique about each face. So I gave a litl more time to each face. Just a little. With a predraw. I did a 2nd one of Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. But I was stumped Cameron Diaz. Slept on it. Still could not figure out what to do for Cameron. Finished a bit of housework, and decided to get back to the pictures. And, Eureka! I knew just what to do for Cameron! Drew it out easily.

But then I was no longer satisfied with Drew Barrymore's exaggerated Caricature. She's So unique. Got to get it. Got to get it. I scribbled. I changed things. I tried to remember my vision. And, Yes! Her 3rd Caricature is It!

So that's it. That's what makes one picture a very nice picture. And what makes another one Magnificent ArtWork.

It's hard enough to make it happen in the short time I take with each picture at a Party. It's almost impossible with guests who tell me not to draw their unique feature. It's almost impossible with guests who try to hide what they look like (like a person with a huge set of teeth who clamps her mouth Shut so I won't be able to draw it. Or a person who carefully pulls her hair over her pointy ears. etc.) But for those times when it can flow right out, That's Fun! To see what I can make!

Broken Flowers

Posted Apr 2009

Wow. If I ever wondered if anybody ever had any new ideas, these days, I wouldn't wonder anymore. I just watched the movie 'Broken Flowers' with Bill Murray, and I was amazed. This story sure is a new idea to me.

It's the middle of the night. I really wanted to get myself onto a better schedule - to get plenty of sleep and still wake early, but it's not going to happen again. Bcause I just had to draw some pink flowers for Bill Murray. That last scene was so amazing:

The surprise of middle-age. Not only this protagonist's problem, but whatever frustration or shock might hit a person - where do they go from there?

This movie's been around since 2005. but I just got around to seeing it. Does anyone know of any sort of a sequel to the philosophy of Broken Flowers?

I like creative-writing. Maybe I'll attempt some ideas some day. But for now, just this picture.
