I was hired to draw Black-and-White Caricatures. So how to 'color' people with Dark Skin? I felt concerned that it shouldn't look like I had such limited ability that I would have thought that 'black' people are actually Black. Of course we all come in all different shades. Of Real Colors. Red Orange Yellow Blue Green Violet. That's all there is.
Whew. Glad that the Black-and-White picture looks Fine. A black-and-white picture for dark-skinned people is the same as a black-and-white picture for light-skinned people. It's just a black-and-white picture.
And I do like the Thinner Paper! The (Color) applies More Smoothly.

I feel like it's a Stop. When I have to draw Facial Hair on a face that had some other 'Most Important Feature'. Not being a man, myself, I don't feel fluent in Facial Hair Styles.
Over the years, I tried to study this by looking at charts of the different types of Facial Hair Styles. I remember one word from that now ~ a Van Dyke. And all I remember about that ~ if I'm even right ~ is a small design with a pointy beard. I don't remember much about those studies because I never actually Used it.
Today I tried a different approach. I decided to describe the Facial Hair to myself based on just a few attributes. Such as:
Beard Full Way Around
Beard Starts Lower
Beard Little at Bottom
Then I used the first few random photos of people with beards that I found online ~ to apply this technique. Just using some old supplies that I have here in my studio. I figured it would sure to make my Bearded Caricature Performance more comfortable.
The first thing I learned is that you can't start by defining the Beard if that's not the most important part of the Caricature. I ended up drawing the following pictures.
It was Fun. And maybe it will break through my Beard conundrum:

All psyched for today's Event. I will be drawing at a Middle School Moving Up Celebration.
I can't wait to get there. So dreaming, I drew some Middle School Children from random references on the web. Good thing I did that. Because the first thing that happened was that I found a picture with 3 people in it. Egads. But it could happen. So draw I did.
Oh no! In trying to make sure that there was a spot for all 3 people (I was drawing in my time off on Smaller paper than I would be using at the Party), I made a dinky little picture. Eeewwww. I tried it again. Maybe a little better, but still.... No.
Finally! I loosened up. I remembered what it is to be an Artist. The 3rd picture is excellent. I can't wait to get to the Party!
