One of The Real Experiences of a Working Artist

Posted Dec 2015

I'll let you in on what sort of stuff really happens. In this case, I was preparing for an upcoming Chanukah Event for which I imagine there will be plenty of young Children as well as Adults. I looked through my laminated Samples that I like to display at events, and I found one that was topped with a black/white linework picture that would inspire me to draw the sort of pictures that I anticipate that my client will like.

But some of the other pictures in that Sample-Group did not look right for this particular Party. I could have just chosen a different Group of Samples, but I really liked that one Inspiring Picture. I felt like it would be attractive at this Party, and I felt like it will inspire me to make this style of Caricatures.

So I photocopied the picture that I liked ~ planning on putting it on top of some other picture in a different group of my Samples. But, having already been Laminated, the copy came out grayish/ dirty looking. That's how the clear plastic lamination looks when its printed.

I didn't want to redraw the picture because every time I draw something, the picture evinces a different feeling for me. THIS was the picture that felt just right for me. So I scanned it into PhotoShop. Still 'grayish', but I was able to make it a lot Better.

I printed it out from PhotoShop. I added simple bold Colors with my Markers and Color Sticks. Particularly using White at the eyes. But no matter what I did, this little girl still looks a little 'dirty'. That made her look like a whole Story to me. It looks like she had been playing in the yard in her good dress, and now she's hiding that activity. Gives her one of many different personalities that a little girl might have ~ in this case perhaps she's an active adventurous little girl. There are lots of stories like that.

And my Sample Picture only got that personality because of the technological aspects of its creation. The original Sample shows a nice good girl who is content' and happy with the life she has. Easy to get along with. Not going to be getting into trouble. We like that type of person too.

Even when I'm making PhotoCopies, each picture develops its own personality ~ just like each person has her own personality. I discovered that I am an Artist because of this.

If we insist on Tight Control of everything while we're making it, it's a Craft.
Artwork involves 'going with the flow'.

My experience with this picture looks topsy turvy. My life is a roller-coaster.
